Spacers provide many solutions when performing a body lift on your vehicle, but you must take care when selecting which ones to use. Traditionally spacers for body lifts were constructed using an aluminium rod which was turned on a lathe and centre drilled - but there is new thinking on this.
Beware the disadvantages of using aluminium spacers in a body lift.
Aluminium spacers may cause corrosion, which weakens or erodes the bolt.
Aluminium spacers for body lifts can cause squeaking sound by rubbing against the floor pan.
Aluminium spacers for body lifts are quite heavy compared to plastic alternatives.
High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is a suitable and safe alternative to aluminium spacers because it has a number of characteristics which make it perfect for body lifts. With high compressive strength, it won't create corrosion and it does not squeak. Plus, HDPE is completely resistant to water, unlike other plastics like nylon, so there is absolutely no absorption of water over time which can damage the material. Accordingly, it is an ideal material to use for spacers for body lifts.
But is HDPE strong enough?
While there are no specific standards for spacers for body lifts, there is a standard for other uses which require much more strength than is required in a vehicle body lift.
SAFETY FIRST!
Spacers for body lifts must be at least as wide as your body mount! Don't follow any bad advice about reducing costs by using smaller spacers... this can result in the body lift spacer being catapulted up through the floor of your vehicle!
