Weather proofing, extra storage & increased cargo security? Get a canopy!
If you're a serious explorer or camper, or if you have needs for your work, a good canopy will give you flexible storage space, great weatherproofing and tight security for your cargo - not to mention a superb enhancement to the look of your vehicle. Let's explore the options out there.
There's a massive market in canopies & choosing can be really daunting...
Selecting a canopy for your vehicle can be a daunting process, because there are so many options out there, and for the same cost as some of the higher-end makes you could pick up a high end vehicle. So, there is good reason to look hard and choose carefully.
You'll have no problem finding something that looks great, but there's more to it than that...
When it comes to your new canopy, ask yourself these questions:
What are you mostly going to use it for, how often and where?
Does the tray need to come off? If so, how often?
Do you want to camp in the tray, out of it, or just use it for storage?
Will it stay loaded with gear, or will it need to do double-duty for work?
What sort of terrain will you be spending the majority of your time in?
...& don't forget, a new canopy means more weight!
Please remember that when you add a canopy and all the equipment, you're essentially redesigning half of your vehicle, which will have a massive effect on gross vehicle weight rating (GVM), towing ability, handling, off-road ability and steering. If your vehicle is already close to its GVM, or you do a lot of towing, the extra weight could make your vehicle unusable. Conversely, front-heavy vehicles which are not often loaded can actually perform better with additional weight on the rear axle.
TOP TIP
You may already know that aluminium trays are superb to save weight and also resistance to corrosion... but you need to think carefully about the design and welding process to make sure you're left with a durable, awesome looking tray.
